Northwestern Architecture Photowalk
September 19, 2020 – 9am-noon
Explore the architecture of Northwestern University. From Brutalism to Post-modernism, you’ll get hands-on tips on how to create compelling architectural abstract images.
We’ll spend 3 hours photographing multiple buildings on Northwestern’s lakefront campus:
- Segal Visitor Center
- Ryan Center for Musical Arts
- Kellogg School of Management
- University Library
Plus, new to photowalks, we’ll meetup a week after the walk (September 26th, 10am CST) for an online critique session of your images!
We’ll meet at the entrance of the Segal Visit Center at 1841 Sheridan Rd, Evanston at 9am. If you’re driving, you can park at the Visitor Center. If you’re using the L, you can take the Purple Line to Foster. It’s a 15 min walk to the center.

Why They Come Back
I was more than satisfied with my decision to join Angie for a recent workshop in Chicago. The experience immensely improved my approach to architectural photography and cityscapes by enabling me to refine technical skills and learn to 'see' architecture in a more creative way. These outcomes reflect the considerable time and effortshe spends with participants, not only during the actual workshop, but in pre and post-workshop presentations and individual critique sessions too. It was also evident that much time and effort had been spent sourcing locations that challenge technical and creative skills. The workshop was carefully planned and organized to optimize time at various locations, and Angie willingly shared her considerable knowledge in a clear and professional manner. Plus, the workshop was also a lot of fun; Angie is one of the nicest people you would meet. I am determined to join her again in the near future.
I have done a couple of Angie's workshops and I really like the way she's structured them. The online meetings before and after the workshop are very informative and insightful, plus it extends the whole experience to about a month of interaction. Angie does a great job supervising the day by getting us to the different locations and offering different perspectives on photographing the architecture. I’m a hobbyist at best, and these workshops have helped me immensely with my composition as well as my post-processing skills. Plus, they are really fun!
"I took part in the Los Angeles workshop and though I am a local, saw the city anew with fresh perspectives provided by Angie and the other participants. Angie brings a proven track record of success and accomplishments and shares her processes, viewpoints and advice openly. She checks-in with you, provides assistance and helps guide your photographic vision. It was an honor to learn from her and to meet like-minded photographers from around the country."
Angie's extensive knowledge of architecture photography, along with thoroughly scouted locations, provides a superior workshop experience! Her web meetings, both before and after the workshop, make them the preferred choice for a serious architectural photography experience. My time with her in both Miami and Los Angeles was productive and enjoyable. I plan on visiting Toronto and New York to benefit from her instruction and location knowledge.
I had such a great time at the Paris workshop! As a relatively inexperienced photographer, I was made comfortable from the start and benefited enormously from Angie’s guidance and advice. Her careful choice of sites proved a fantastic opportunity to train the eye and try new things in a variety of settings. There was a great balance of support and space to experiment, and further opportunities to develop through the post-workshop online sessions (editing and critique). The great thing is that I feel I have kept learning ever since!
“I attended the Paris workshop, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. I’ve struggled with architecture photography in the past, but Michael and Angie helped me approach my pictures in a different way. They provided just the right amount of hands-on instruction while still enabling us to explore and capture each location as we wanted. They also meticulously planned the workshop schedule in such an efficient way. We saw so much of Paris, but never felt rushed. I left the trip with pictures I’m very happy with, and I am looking forward to attending another workshop soon!”
“I love going on camera trips with Angie. She is a very accomplished photographer in her own right and I like to look at the same things with my camera as she does! She's always well organized - we can devote ourselves to image-making and not have to think about how to get from place to place and when to be there by - it is all part of her wonderful planning. She provides just the right amount of coaching and critique - just what you need when you want it. I’m looking forward to the next trip.”
These are such fun workshops! Angie has a clear plan and is able to keep the group on track throughout the day, plus she's knowledgeable on each building and its architect. I've attended two workshops with her, and, rain or shine, was able to get pictures that I was proud of. I loved the balance of architectural abstracts and cityscapes, and the pre, post and critique sessions are an added bonus!
“If you want a workshop with the perfect balance of camera techniques and compositional advice...this is the workshop for you. Plus, Angie is the nicest person! Can't wait for my next workshop...New York City!”
“I very much enjoyed the LA workshop with Angie, it was great to explore and see my own home town in a new way, visiting locations I had not yet discovered myself. Angie generously shared her expertise, tips, and techniques all day throughout the workshop, and was always available for questions and helping out the students get the shot they wanted. She's fully dedicated to ensuring all the participants were happy and having a great time, and that everyone walked away with a little more skill than they started with. I look forward to attending another great workshop with her soon!"
“As I look at my photographic work over the last year, I recognize that some of my best shots have come from the days I have spent with Angie. I’ve been with her in three different cities, and each time my work has taken significant strides forward. I won’t hesitate at all to sign up for future workshops because there is one thing I’ve learned from the photographic journey is that we learn best by being around the best and Angie fits that description.”
“Angie leads the most value-added workshops that I have ever attended. Not only does she provide pre and post review sessions, with a separate critique of participants’ work after the workshop, but her workshops are very well planned, providing a diverse and interesting selection of architecture and cityscapes; something for everybody! She's very generous sharing her knowledge and helping each participant when needed, which is why I am really looking forward to attending my 4th workshop with her.”
